Legal Assistance
Included in this list are organizations that provide free or low-cost legal services to victims and survivors of abuse, as well as to others who qualify. Even if the organization does not have a lawyer available to represent you in court, you may want to ask if there is a lawyer with whom you can consult to obtain advice. We list the organizations by the county where the office is located, but many offices serve multiple counties. We indicate the “counties served” whenever possible. Provides free legal services in certain legal matters to low-income persons in Baldwin, Clarke, Mobile, and Washington counties. Areas of assistance include: divorce by agreement, custody by agreement, visitation, child support modifications, adoption, paternity, tenants’ rights, and more. Eligibility for services is based on income. Apply for services in person during intake hours, call the office, or complete the paper application fax/email/mail it to SAVLP. The Volunteer Lawyers Program primarily serves residents who live outside of Birmingham and Baldwin, Clarke, Madison, Mobile, Montgomery, and Washington counties. (There are separate volunteer lawyer programs serving those areas.) Types of cases handled include: adoption by relatives, child support modifications, uncontested divorce, uncontested custody, guardianship, visitation, and other civil legal issues. They also hold monthly advice clinics virtually and in person; check their website for the clinic schedule.
