Included in this list are organizations that provide free or low-cost legal services to victims and survivors of abuse, as well as to others who qualify. Even if the organization does not have a lawyer available to represent you in court, you may want to ask if there is a lawyer with whom you can consult to obtain advice. We list the organizations by the county where the office is located, but many offices serve multiple counties. We indicate the “counties served” whenever possible. Provides free legal advice and representation to county residents in civil law matters. Areas of service include family law, landlord/tenant issues, and consumer matters. To apply for services, complete the online intake form or call the office. Household income requirements apply. Legal services are provided regardless of immigration status, and translators are available.

Essex-Newark Legal Services (ENLS) provides free legal assistance to low-income residents of Newark County in civil law matters. ENLS offers victims of domestic violence help in obtaining restraining orders, and in issues involving children, shelter, and support. The Family Law Clinic provides free legal services to individuals needing representation in a wide variety of family law matters. The cases may include restraining orders, divorce, custody and parenting time issues, support issues, and litigation on behalf of domestic violence victims.
