Legal Assistance
Included in this list are organizations that provide free or low-cost legal services to victims and survivors of abuse, as well as to others who qualify. Even if the organization does not have a lawyer available to represent you in court, you may want to ask if there is a lawyer with whom you can consult to obtain advice. We list the organizations by the county where the office is located, but many offices serve multiple counties. We indicate the “counties served” whenever possible. Lone Star Legal Aid provides legal services, including representation, to low income residents of 72 counties in Texas from 12 offices. The Paris office serves Delta, Franklin, Hopkins, Lamar, Morris, Red River and Titus counties. They provide services for a variety of legal issues including issues regarding domestic violence and family law. Lone Star Legal Aid will provide assistance to those with limited English skills.

Texas RioGrande Legal Aid (TRLA) provides free legal services to low-income residents in sixty-eight counties of Southwest Texas. The Victoria office serves Calhoun, DeWitt, Goliad, Gonzales, Jackson, Lavaca, Refugio and Victoria counties. The majority of TRLA clients are low-income women and children who are victims of domestic violence and who need assistance in escaping violence and remaining violence-free. To qualify for free legal services from TRLA, an applicant must meet the income, asset, and immigration requirements established by the United States Congress, the Texas Legislature, and other funding sources. TRLA will always attempt to find a funding source that will permit representation for persons who are unable to afford the services of a private attorney. They provide services in English and Spanish.

The Catholic Charities Diocese of Lubbock’s immigration program provides assistance with all immigration processes such as citizenship and replacement of legal permanent resident card, employment authorization card, and all family based categories, and Violence Against Women Act (VAWA).

Legal Aid of NorthWest Texas (LANWT) offers free civil legal assistance to low-income Texans. They serve 115 counties in Texas with 15 offices; the Lubbock office serves Kent, Garza, Lynn, Terry, Gaines, Dawson, Borden, Cochran, Hockley, Lubbock, Crosby, Dickens and Yoakum counties. They are able to represent clients in any type of civil matter. Their practice focuses on support for families, preserving the home, maintaining, economic stability, safety, stability, and health, individuals with special needs and problems affecting groups of individuals. Specifically they take cases with domestic violence such as, adoption, child abuse and neglect, child custody, divorces involving family violence, enforcement of access and visitation, modification of visitation/custody, parental rights termination, paternity, termination and adoption when abuse is alleged and visitation enforcement.

The Legal Aid Society of Lubbock works to afford low income clients of the South Plains with legal assistance, advocacy, and counsel in matters of family and elder law at free and/or reduced cost. They provide assistance with family law cases including, protective orders for victims of domestic violence, stalking, or sexual assault, adoption, divorce, child custody/child support, grandparent access, enforcement of current court orders and modification of court orders.
