How long can alimony last?

The law says that an order for alimony could be ordered for the following lengths of time:

  • for an “indefinite period” of time, which means without an end date;
  • for a specific time period that is necessary for you to get adequate training, education, skills, etc., that will lead to you getting “appropriate employment,” which could mean:
    • getting a new occupation; 
    • updating or expanding your existing qualifications; or
    • otherwise improving your employability; or
  • until “further order of the court,” which could be decided during a later court date.1
