Laws current as of April 1, 2025 What is a gun violence restraining order?
A gun violence restraining order is a civil court order that prohibits an individual, called the respondent, from having firearms or ammunition in his/her custody or control, or from purchasing, receiving, or attempting to purchase or receive a firearm or ammunition.
The judge can issue an order even if the respondent does not own firearms, ammunition, or other deadly weapons at the time that the judge is making his/her decision.1
