Laws current as of November 15, 2024 How long can alimony last?
The law says that an order for alimony could be ordered for the following lengths of time:
- for an “indefinite period” of time, which means without an end date;
- for a specific time period that is necessary for you to get adequate training, education, skills, etc., that will lead to you getting “appropriate employment,” which could mean:
- getting a new occupation;
- updating or expanding your existing qualifications; or
- otherwise improving your employability; or
- until “further order of the court,” which could be decided during a later court date.1
