The Gary Commission for Women advocates for women and provides education and outreach on the issues of homelessness, domestic violence, sexual assault, teen dating violence, bullying, and numerous other issues. Providing information for crime prevention, safety planning, human trafficking, bystander intervention, trauma and mental health, as well as male sexual assault and domestic violence. Shelter services at the Rainbow-Ark Shelter are available for homeless women who are residents of Gary and both women and men who are victims of sexual assault and domestic violence.

Haven House provides a 24-hour emergency shelter for domestic violence victims and their dependents. Haven House provides services to Hammond, East Chicago, Whiting, Munster, Griffith, and Highland, which comprises a significant geographic area of Northwest Indiana.
