Included in this list are organizations that provide free or low-cost legal services to victims and survivors of abuse, as well as to others who qualify. Even if the organization does not have a lawyer available to represent you in court, you may want to ask if there is a lawyer with whom you can consult to obtain advice. We list the organizations by the county where the office is located, but many offices serve multiple counties. We indicate the “counties served” whenever possible. The Immigration Assistance Program (IAP) provides legal representation to eligible clients. Areas of legal representation include: adjustment of status for family members; applications for naturalization; petitions for victims of domestic violence and other victims of crimes; petitions for alien relatives; temporary status protection renewal or initial application; and applications for green card renewal. Additionally, the IAP provides the following services to non-clients: referrals to appropriate legal services for civil and criminal matters and information on the rights of immigrants and undocumented persons.

Legal Aid of Western Michigan (LAWM) provides free legal advice and representation to low income individuals. LAWM does not handle criminal matters, civil matters only. Types of cases LAWM often handle, but not all, include: family law, housing, public benefits, consumer matters, tax, education, and individual rights. LAWM’s Kalamazoo office serves Cass, Kalamazoo, St. Joseph and Van Buren Counties.
