Included in this list are organizations that provide free or low-cost legal services to victims and survivors of abuse, as well as to others who qualify. Even if the organization does not have a lawyer available to represent you in court, you may want to ask if there is a lawyer with whom you can consult to obtain advice. We list the organizations by the county where the office is located, but many offices serve multiple counties. We indicate the “counties served” whenever possible. Legal Services of Northern Michigan provides civil legal services to low income people and/or people who are 60 years of age or older. Legal representation can be obtained in civil law areas such as: domestic relations; public benefits and administrative; housing; consumer; healthcare; Elder law, and school problems. These services include: basic discussion of client rights; counseling; preparation of letters, documents, deeds, and pleadings; negotiations; administrative hearings; trials, and in some cases appeals, and community legal education and presentations. Legal Services of Northern Michigan does not provide service for criminal cases, traffic tickets or “fee-generating” cases. Types of cases LAWM often handle, but not all, include: family law, housing, public benefits, consumer matters, tax, education, and individual rights. Legal Services of South Central Michigan (LSSCM) provides free legal advice and representation in certain civil cases to low income persons and senior citizens (regardless of income). LSSCM is a division of the Michigan Advocacy Program. Services offered/cases handled include: family law-domestic violence and maintaining stable homes; housing-homelessness prevention; public benefits – to provide income for basic needs; consumer matters – to protect economic stability; healthcare – helping clients to secure needed health care; and special legal needs and seniors. LSSCM’s Monroe office serves Monroe and Lenawee Counties.
