Included in this list are organizations that provide free or low-cost legal services to victims and survivors of abuse, as well as to others who qualify. Even if the organization does not have a lawyer available to represent you in court, you may want to ask if there is a lawyer with whom you can consult to obtain advice. We list the organizations by the county where the office is located, but many offices serve multiple counties. We indicate the “counties served” whenever possible. Legal Services of Eastern Michigan provides legal assistance to low income individuals, and those who are facing foreclosure, discriminated against in housing or seniors (persons 60 years of age and older) regardless of income. LSEM does not handle criminal matters. Types of cases LSEM handles include: family law; housing; fair housing; consumer problems; government benefits; education; employment; individual rights; and seniors. Legal Services of Eastern Michigan’s Saginaw office serves Arenac, Bay, Clare, Gladwin, Gratiot, Isabella, Midland, and Saginaw Counties.

Underground Railroad, Inc. provides services to victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking, and human trafficking. Services include a 24-hour hotline, an Emergency Response Program, emergency shelter, advocacy (safety planning, transportation, financial resources, childcare, healthcare, court, and more), therapy (sexual assault, intimate partner violence, youth, and co-victim of homicide), support groups, housing assistance, youth advocacy and childcare, and community outreach and prevention. Underground Railroad also has an attorney (available through advocate referral only). The attorney may assist with divorce hearings, custody proceedings, and housing negotiations. Legal Services of Northern Michigan provides civil legal services to low income people and/or people who are 60 years of age or older. Legal representation can be obtained in civil law areas such as: domestic relations; public benefits and administrative; housing; consumer; healthcare; Elder law, and school problems. These services include: basic discussion of client rights; counseling; preparation of letters, documents, deeds, and pleadings; negotiations; administrative hearings; trials, and in some cases appeals, and community legal education and presentations. Legal Services of Northern Michigan does not provide service for criminal cases, traffic tickets or “fee-generating” cases.
