Included in this list are organizations that provide free or low-cost legal services to victims and survivors of abuse, as well as to others who qualify. Even if the organization does not have a lawyer available to represent you in court, you may want to ask if there is a lawyer with whom you can consult to obtain advice. We list the organizations by the county where the office is located, but many offices serve multiple counties. We indicate the “counties served” whenever possible. The Family Law Project (FLP) is an affiliate program of Legal Services of South Central Michigan (LSSCM) that provides legal services to survivors of domestic violence. The FLP only handles domestic violence cases. Services include: personal protection order, divorce and custody cases, and case strategy. FLP serves Washtenaw County.

Legal Services of South Central Michigan (LSSCM) provides free legal advice and representation in certain civil cases to low income persons and senior citizens (regardless of income). LSSCM is a division of the Michigan Advocacy Program. Services offered/cases handled include: family law-domestic violence and maintaining stable homes; housing-homelessness prevention; public benefits – to provide income for basic needs; consumer matters – to protect economic stability; healthcare – helping clients to secure needed health care; and special legal needs and seniors. LSSCM serves Barry, Branch, Calhoun, Clinton, Eaton, Hillsdale, Ingham, Jackson, Lenawee, Livingston, Monroe, Shiawassee, and Washtenaw Counties. LSSCM also provides legal services to senior citizens of St. Joseph County.

Legal Aid and Defender Association, Inc. (LAD) provides free or low-cost civil legal services to low-income individuals. Areas of civil legal service include: property rights (public housing, eviction diversion, etc.); bankruptcy; income support – social security/SSI and Department of Human Services; public benefits (health insurance, food stamps, etc.); education (special education, school suspensions and expulsions, etc.); and human trafficking (personal protection orders, T, U, and Special Immigrant Juvenile Status non-immigrant visas, divorce, child custody and support issues, etc.). The Legal Aid and Defender Association serves Macomb, Oakland, and Wayne counties.
